TOURISM IN SANTA MARTA
PLACES TO VISIT
A stroll through Santa Marta and Its Historic center
In its streets the feeling of a glorious past is born. Santa Marta was not any city, and less in view of what today can be called proudly its historic center.
Dark wood balconies bordered of waves and shapes that distill good taste. White facades and other colorful ones that compose a visually seductive song. Santa Marta knows how to express what it contains inside: a lot of historical and cultural richness.
It is necessary to point out those parks that favor the encounter and the re-encounters, inescapable stages of a weekend walk. In these places you can enjoy the city in the shade of a tree or an umbrella that offer some terraces of bars in the purest Mediterranean style.
But every walk has its beginning, and the cathedral of Santa Marta should be the starting point of this great urban network. Considered the first cathedral in Latin America, its construction began in 1765 and was extended for more than a century due to the constant attacks of English, French and Dutch Corsairs.
In Santa Marta, Simón Bolívar died and, as a result, the city is known for hosting the remains of the liberator for a long time. In the cathedral stands a plaque reminiscent of a solemn parade made on December 20, 1830 from the House of Customs (today headquarters of the Gold Museum) to transfer the funerary remains. In 1842 these remains were exhumed and sent to Caracas, the hometown of Bolívar.
But the name of the Liberator of 5 nations not only resonates in the vicinity of this early building. Following the layout of two streets that border it, we discover the exquisiteness of the colonial spirit that prevails in the center. And if it is true that some facades reveal the absence of maintenance, always predominates the idea of a recent flowering that gradually seizes each corner.
We encounter the airs of grandeur of a square that reminds us – once again – the Great liberator: The Plaza de Simón Bolívar. In this neuralgic point are located the mayor's office, the Gold Museum and the Bank of the Republic. The shade of the trees provides a space for rest and a moment to decide on what route to follow: The road to the beach or re-explore the center.
The way to the square of the lovers, exposes the great gastronomic offer of the city but also hotel. Elegant hostels installed within colonial houses such as the Hostal de San Pedro, the House of the bluff or the house of Leda alternate with other varied restaurants in a dazzling and entertaining ensemble.
The road to the beach reveals two reconciled facets of the city: its modern and traditional character. The statue of Rodrigo Bastidas on the promenade transports us to the Times of the foundation of Santa Marta. The figures of some indigenous people remember the presence of the four ethnic groups on the coast, while the Navy in the background discovers the development of recent years.
Those who arrive in Santa Marta can do a review of the history of America when visiting the villa of San Pedro Alejandrino, the hacienda where the Liberator Simón Bolívar died on December 17, 1830. This place, which is surrounded by ancient trees, preserves some of the furniture of the time and is the headquarters of the Bolivarian Museum of Contemporary Art.
